A PSNI dog unit has arrested two men after a woman was reportedly robbed in the middle of Belfast.

The alleged victim was knocked to the ground during the incident in the Alfred Street area .

It is understood two men were detained when officers from a police dog unit were guided by CCTV operators. However the dog did not have to be deployed as it was deemed unnecessary by the officers at the scene.

Sergeant Darren Meharg said: “Just after 11.15pm, police received a report that two males, one wearing a grey tracksuit, had knocked a woman to the ground, stealing her handbag, in Alfred Street. During the incident the woman sustained a cut to her head and was brought to hospital for medical attention.

“Local police, guided by CCTV operators located two suspects nearby. The two males were stopped by a police dog unit and subsequently arrested. They are both currently helping with our enquiries.

“I would appeal to anyone who has any information about this incident to contact police at Musgrave on 101 quoting reference number 2115 of 14 August 2019.”

Police investigating the robbery confirmed they have arrested a 28-year-old male and a 31-year-old male “on suspicion of a number of offences including robbery and handling stolen goods”.

The PSNI added that witnesses can also call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
