A number of firefighters have been reportedly hurt amid efforts to save a man from a burning home.

The "walking wounded" were treated by paramedics at the Co Antrim farmhouse, while the man retrieved from the burning building and another patient were taken to hospital.

The Fire Service, paramedics and police were dispatched to reports of the blaze on Carlane Road, Toome, on Wednesday evening.

A Northern Ireland Ambulance spokesperson said they received a call about the incident at the residential home at 20.23pm.

They added: "Two Rapid Response Paramedics and two Emergency Ambulances were dispatched to the incident. Following assessment and initial treatment at the scene, two patients were transported to Antrim Area Hospital."

Toome councillor Henry Cushinan said: "I was at the scene last night and saw a number of firefighters being treated in the back of an ambulance.

"I would describe them as the walking wounded, I saw a couple with dressings and others around the ambulances.

"It was a roadside two-storey house and I believe the man was the only one in the house at the time. He was being treated by paramedics and was taken from the scene in an ambulance."

The Sinn Fein representative said he was talking to the man's brother, as while he lived on his own at "the family home", many of his relatives live in the area.

He added: "My thoughts are with the man's family at this time."
