You have 48 hours on the clock to make a break for it. Time is ticking to squeeze in as much family fun as possible without spending precious time in the car and hearing those little voices shouting ‘are we there yet?’ on repeat.

Mid-Ulster is the unsung hero in our staycation crown with stunning scenery and plenty of activities to suit the whole family.

Here’s the lowdown on what’s on offer to make your two days terrific.      

Activities

The Argory - Step back in time and show the youngsters how the other half lived in times gone by. The former home of the MacGeough Bond family is a handsome estate on the outskirts of Dungannon. The surrounding 320 acres of beautiful, riverside woodland is ideal setting for a walk and picnic after a tour around this historical house.  

Armagh Planetarium - Have you any space cadets in your crew?! Explore the mysteries of the Cosmos by heading to the planetarium for a totally out of this world experience that brings galaxies, planets, the moon and stars to life.

Davagh Forest Park - Get on yer bike! Ditch the tech and get out into the fresh air to explore the surrounding scenery and nature by bike. Cycling through this forest park near Cookstown or peddling along Blessingbourne’s bike trails near Clogher Valley are great ways to spend quality time with the family doing an activity that everyone can enjoy.

Todd’s Leap - For the thrill seekers there is plenty on offer at Todd’s Leap activity centre to satisfy adrenaline junkies of all ages. Whether it’s body zorbing, or testing your nerve on the zipline or climbing wall, or competing against each other in the total wipeout course, there’s plenty to tire you and the younger generation out!

Oxford Island  - This is the perfect place to get the kids close to nature. A visit to this habitat haven, on the shores of stunning Lough Neagh, will give the whole family the chance to explore the reed beds, wildlife ponds, forests and wildflower meadows.

There is also a network of walking trails, bird hides to watch some feathered friends from and the Lough Neagh Discovery Centre to learn more about the species that call this picturesque area home.

Dining

Whether it’s a snack or a sit down meal you are after the troops have to be fed!

Here are a few places that fit the family friendly bill.

The Lockkeeper’s Cottage  - This gem of a tearoom is tucked away sitting on an idylic spot on the banks of Toome Canal. Its outside patio is the perfect place to tuck into their homemade scones, soups, sandwiches and sweet treats on offer.

Harry’s Bar & Bistro- This popular, award winning bistro is set within the beautiful Tullylagan Country House Hotel and is brimming with character. Harry’s offers great menus with kids eating free (terms and conditions apply) mid-week when you dine from the Main Grill Menu.

The Brewer’s House - This gastro pub and restaurant not only boasts great food but it is also one of the oldest public houses in Ulster so has plenty of experience in offering warm hospitality to weary travellers.

Accommodation

There is a good selection of family friendly places to choose from to lay your head and recharge the batteries ready for the next day.

Blessingbourne Estate - A working farm set on a beautiful country estate on the edge of Clogher Valley, just a five minute walk to the village of Fivemiletown. Their courtyard apartments range from 3* to 5* and are great for families. There are plenty of activities to keep the ‘big ones’ and ‘little ones’ busy onsite with mountain bike trails, a pump track, tennis court and boating. There is also the costume museum, where the kids can play dress up and a host of animals for them to meet. And don’t worry about packing toys because there are outside toys as well as the wooden play area for the younger ones to enjoy.

Spice Cottages -  These charming cottages are just a stone’s throw from the picturesque village of Moy and all its independent shops and eateries. Its modern, spacious interior and outside facilities have been kitted out with families in mind.

There is an outdoor barbeque along with a garden play area, games room and free wireless broadband. It’s ideally located with the Armagh Planetarium , Ardress House and The Argory only a short drive away.

Caitlin's Cottage – This County Armagh bolthole is set in a quiet, rural setting and offers a slice of self-catered luxury in a cosy setting.

There are plenty of family attractions, such as fishing, walking and horse-riding nearby. And if you have a baby the steriliser, high chair and cot available will make packing a lot easier.
