A Co Antrim footballer is celebrating after signing a contract with EFL Championship club Ipswich Town.

Ballymena teenager Cameron Stewart has agreed a three-year scholarship with the Tractor Boys, followed by a one-year professional deal.

The recently-turned 16-year-old will move across the water in the summer before embarking on pre-season with his new club.

Speaking to Belfast Live Sport, the Cambridge House Grammar School student said: "I am delighted to sign the deal with Ipswich.

"They are a big club and it is very exciting to be joining up with them. I can't wait to get over there this summer and working hard."

Ipswich spotted Cameron at last summer's SuperCupNI tournament when the defender captained Co Antrim to the Junior title.

The county team earned the trophy with a stunning victory over Manchester United in the final.

"I had a few clubs interested in me, including Fulham, Stoke City and Watford. But Ipswich was the club I wanted to join," Cameron, who has spent the past five years with Linfield, added.

"Thankfully I got spotted at the SuperCupNI and things started to take off from there."

Cameron started his career with Carniny Youth in Ballymena before spending a year with Coleraine and then moving on to Linfield.

Carniny coach and chairman Jason Hunter said the club were delighted to see one of their former players earn his move across the water.

"Cameron was with us from about five years old and stayed at Carniny until he was about 10 or so. He played in midfield for a while but then got a chance at centre-half and he has always impressed in that position," Jason said.

"He got noticed at the SuperCupNI last year and we are delighted that he has got his chance. It is always nice seeing players who played for Carniny Youth progress and get their chance.

"Cameron knows the hard work starts now but he is level-headed and ready to make an impression and we wish him luck.

"We will certainly be keeping a close eye on him."

Linfield Academy chief Glenn Ferguson added: "Cameron is one of a number of our players going across the water, so we are delighted for the boys to get their chance.

"He can play in midfield or defence. Clubs across the water seem to think he is a better centre-half because of his size, but he is versatile."
