BENNINGTON — A man suspected of robbing the Subway restaurant on North Street in June has been brought back to Vermont and is facing two felony charges.
Zachary Dumas, 33, is charged with felony larceny in connection with the alleged Subway robbery on June 7, according to court records. He is also facing a felony escape from furlough charge. He has pleaded not guilty to both charges.
An employee told police that Dumas, wearing a gray hoodie and work gloves "that appeared to be covered in cement," entered the Subway and, with one hand in a pocket "making motions as if he had a weapon," demanded money, according to a police affidavit. Police were "unable to obtain an exact dollar amount that was taken during [the] robbery."
The same night of the incident, officers allegedly "became involved in a foot pursuit" of Dumas near the restaurant, according to court papers. "The male ran from the business next door to Subway, back and forth North Street, heading in an easterly direction" and wasn't found "after an extensive search."
Dumas was arrested in Norwalk, Connecticut, in late June, The Banner previously reported.
A discovery conference related to the two charges was held this week in Bennington County Superior Court, according to court records.
Dumas has not posted bail—set at $5,000 for the escape charge and $15,000 for the larceny charge, court records show—but even if he were to do so, he might not be released from custody because he is currently serving a sentence related to different cases.
The defendant is now incarcerated at Southern State Correctional Facility in Springfield, according to a Vermont Department of Corrections database.
