SPRINGFIELD — Last weekend may have marked the end of the basketball season, however, some of Berkshire County's best high school hoopers had one last chance to take the court before graduation.

Eleven local players traveled to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield on Friday night to compete in the Western Massachusetts All-Star Games on the Jerry Colangelo Court of Dreams.

The first game of the night featured the best senior boys Western Mass. D-III and D-IV had to offer, including Drury's Reece Racette, Lee's Ben Harding and Wahconah's Tom Burris.

"Michael Jordan has always been my guy," Harding said. "I've always enjoyed the Jordan vs. LeBron James debate and it was really cool to see Jordan front-and-center when you enter the hall. It's great to have the opportunity to play in a game like this."

It was Drury's all-time leading scorer, Racette, who kick-started the Berkshire County scoring with four baskets and two assists in the first quarter. The Blue Devil finished the night with a Berkshire County-high 18 points and five assists.

"It's always fun to have a chance to come out and play basketball," Racette said. "There's a lot of great players out here at such a historic place. It's the Mecca of basketball and it's great to have the opportunity to play here."

The court quickly took the form of a firing range as players on both sides extended their range, knocking down 3-pointers from everywhere on the floor. With that in mind, Racette's highlight came in the fourth quarter, where the court wasn't a shooting range, but a launching pad.

"I had a trailer behind me," Racette said. "Ben Harding, a Berkshire County guy to Berkshire County guy."

Racette's coach and dad, Jack Racette discussed how important Racette's passing was on Drury's Western Mass. title run and he displayed it with a perfect no-look pass back to Harding, who flushed it for two.

"I was going out there trying to dunk for sure," Harding said. "I take pride in it and it's fun to do. [Playing in the All-Star game] was good closure for sure. I've been playing with and against these guys all year so this was a good way to end the season."

Harding finished the game with 14 points and a rebound.

With a minute left in the game, Wahconah's Burris, who added five rebounds, drained a 3-pointer to help the red team crack 100 points. Racette scored the team's last two baskets as the three Berkshire County players in red took the opener 107-93.

The next game of the night featured the best D-I through D-IV girls in Western Mass. with Pittsfield's Lexi Garvey, Drury's Brooke DiGennaro, Hoosac Valley's Lexi Mercer and Alie Mendel along with Mount Everett's Gwendolyn Carpenter. Garvey suited up on the white team, while the other four played in red.

"I had no idea [about the All-Star game] until I got home one night and my mom came running down the stairs," DiGennaro, who was at the Hall of Fame for the first time, said. "I thought it was so cool. I thought it would be nice to end my season here with some 3's."

It was Garvey who started the Berkshire County scoring, knocking down a jumper to extend the white lead to 6-0, three minutes into the game.

The red team struggled to score early and went to Berkshire County's best sharpshooter, Mercier of the Hurricanes, to break the slump. Mercier answered the call, draining a 3-ball to cut the white lead to 6-3.

DiGennaro, who had seven points and three rebounds through three quarters, manufactured a five-point run to help the white team take a 15-12 lead to the end of the first quarter.

The white team started the second quarter with a 9-2 run until Mercier canned another 3-pointer to cut the deficit to 21-17.

Mendel scored four points and Carpenter added two assists in the third quarter, however, the white team had too much firepower, leading 58-39 at the end of the frame.

"I never loved basketball until high school, so coming to the Hall of Fame wasn't a huge deal," Carpenter said. "[The All-Star game] is super cool to be a part of. Not many players get to say they played at the hall and to do it with all the best players in Western Mass. is really cool. I've played with Brooke, Alie and Lexi, and I was really excited to play with [Monson's] Kaitlyn Santons, who I played with in AAU."

The final game of the night featured the best D-I and D-II boys players. Representing Berkshire County were Taconic's Quincy Davis and Quentin Gittens, who helped the Braves to back-to-back state finals appearances.

The final score of the girl's game and information regarding the boys D-I/D-II game was not available by print deadline.
