Kygo & Whitney Houston’s ‘Higher Love’ Hits No. 1 On Dance Club Songs Chart

Kygo and late legend Whitney Houston lift 3-1 on Billboard’s Dance Club Songs chart (dated Aug. 24) with “Higher Love.” The coronation comes 33 years after Steve Winwood’s original hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and over seven years after Houston’s death.
The Kygo-produced remake was remixed by Dirty Disco; Barry Harris; and Marc Stout and Tony Arzadon, among others.
Kygo collects his third leader on the list, following “Remind Me to Forget,” featuring Miguel (September 2018), and “Coming Over,” with Dillon Francis and featuring James Hersey (June 2016). For Houston, “Higher” is her 14th topper, dating to her first, “I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me)” (July 1987; two weeks at No. 1). She had last led with “Million Dollar Bill” in November 2009. (She passed away Feb. 11, 2012.)
“Higher” also returns for a fourth frame atop Dance/Electronic Digital Song Sales, up 4% to 3,000 sold, according to Nielsen Music. On Hot Dance/Electronic Songs, it bounds 7-3, after reaching No. 2 in July.
Houston isn’t the only artist who conquered charts in the ’80s infusing the latest Dance Club Songs top five.
Madonna’s “I Rise” lifts 4-2, moving to with a rank of her record-extending 48th No. 1 with “I Rise” (4-2). (She’s peaked at No. 2 with “Human Nature” in 1995 and “Miles Away” in 2009.) “I Rise” was remixed by Tracy Young, DJLW and Thomas Gold, among others.
Plus, Sting ascends 9-5 on the ranking with his update of “If You Love Somebody Set Them Free,” halving the peak of his original version, which reached No. 10 in 1985. The song is Sting’s sixth top five entry and fifth in a row dating to 2003.
As for other remakes of ’80s hits on the latest survey, Mari Burrelle’s cover of Deniece Williams’ “Let’s Hear It for the Boy” bumps 16-13 and Van Halen’s “Jump 2019” ranks at No. 21, after reaching No. 9. (Honorable mention to another notable ’80s character on Dance Club Songs: “PACMAN,” by Dave Aude featuring Sam Tinnesz, eats up the No. 26 spot.)
‘GOOD’ TIMES: Elsewhere in the Hot Dance/Electronic Songs top 10, Illenium and Jon Bellion’s “Good Things Fall Apart” boasts the top gains in streaming and digital sales at No. 9. Leading up to the Aug. 16 arrival of Illenium’s album Awake, the song drew 3 million U.S. streams (up 6%) and sold 2,000 downloads (up 21%) in the week ending Aug. 15.
‘COLD’ IS HOT: On Dance/Mix Show Airplay, Hawaii native and Los Angeles-based producer Mahalo (aka Nick Jay) and Toronto-based producer Dlmt (real name Dan Balamut) ascend 3-1 with “So Cold,” featuring singer Lily Denning. The recent Billboard Dance Chart Upstart is the first No. 1 for all three acts.
