The Binghamton Rumble Ponies came out strong to begin the second half of the Eastern League season.
They won their first two games of the new half, capping off a three-game sweep of the New Hampshire Fisher Cats.
But then, the Richmond Flying Squirrels came to town and unraveled everything the Ponies had put together.
Perhaps it was pay back for when Binghamton swept Richmond back in late May, or maybe the Squirrels are just fully engaged on securing a playoff birth of their own.
Either way, the Squirrels swooped out of Bingo with a trio of wins after this past weekend.
After falling 4-1 on Friday to Richmond, the Ponies were looking to take the next two and win the series.
On Saturday, the Squirrels went up 2-0 after one, and 4-0 after five-and-a-half.
Binghamton got a pair back in the bottom of the 6th thanks to a Patrick Mazeika home run.
But, Richmond holds on to win it 4-2.
Ponies trying to salvage at least one game in the series on Sunday.
After going down 2-0 in the top of the 6th, Binghamton scored a run in the 6th and 7th to tie things up.
The Squirrels got two in the top of the 8th, with Bingo getting another in the bottom half.
However, they couldn’t get any closer as Richmond completed the sweep with a 4-3 win.
Richmond doubled up Binghamton in runs scored 12-6 in the series, and dropped the Ponies to 2-3 in the second half.
Still very early, but the Ponies still in good shape as they’re only a game back of first in the standings.
Binghamton welcomes in Erie for five games in three days.
That series began tonight, about an hour ago, at NYSEG Stadium as part of a doubleheader.
Game two will be about a half hour after game one and will be a shortened seven inning contest.
