A teenage cyclist was seriously injured in a collision with a van in Lichfield yesterday evening.

Emergency services rushed to the junction of the A51 and Abnalls Lane at around 5.25pm on Thursday, January 31, where they treated a 16-year-old from Burntwood.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said: “On arrival, crews discovered a cyclist, a teenage male, who had suffered multiple serious  injuries in the collision.

“He received specialist trauma care at the scene before being transported to Birmingham Children’s Hospital in a serious condition.

The collision happened at the junction of the A51 Western Bypass and Abnalls Lane

“The van driver, a man, was uninjured in the incident.

The cyclist’s condition is described as “serious but stable”.

Two ambulances and two paramedic officers attended the scene together with the Midlands Air Ambulance crews from Staffordshire and Cosford in rapid response cars.

It is reported that the teenager was in collision with a Vauxhall Vivaro van and  the road was closed for approximately three hours whilst detailed investigation work was carried out and the police would like to thank the public for their patience.
