A water attraction at a Midlands theme park was dramatically closed this weekend - after children were plagued by diarrhoea.

A number of children fell ill, causing the closure to be implemented.

Mums and dads of those children who attended the park on a school trip have reported kids suffering from diarrhoea and vomiting.

Simon Taylor went on the trip with his two sons.

And he said his youngest child Zack, seven, began vomiting the next evening, followed by Alfie, aged nine.

Mr Taylor said: "My youngest was sick first, and then my eldest was also ill and it went on through the night.

"We've not had much sleep.

"It was a hot day and they were all running around, so I assumed it was too much heat exposure.

"But then I heard all the other parents were saying their children were sick, all with exactly the same symptoms.

"I think there are around 30 now."

The  Nottingham Post  reports Worried parents of Springbank Primary School, in Eastwood, said their children experienced diarrhoea and vomiting after their school trip to Twinlakes Family Theme Park in Metlon Mowbray on Wednesday.

The theme park has been closed since.

Many other parents took to  Facebook  to raise their concerns that their children were experiencing severe sickness.

Another parent, Amy Braithwaite, had to take care of her three children, who had similar symptoms.

The 30-year-old mum said: "My mum and I went along on the school trip with the kids, who were mainly in the water park.

"On Wednesday evening, all three of my children were fine. But by Thursday night, they were all feeling sick."

Chelsea Smith, aged 11, Kobi, aged nine, and four-year-old Keira all suffered with stomach ache, headaches and vomiting.

"At first I thought it must be sunstroke but then I spoke to my neighbour who also went on the trip and she said the same happened with her children," Ms Braithwaite said.

"Then I saw all the comments on the school's Facebook page, all the same symptoms at the same time.

"My oldest is still feeling bad. I'm just quite shocked because she doesn't get ill often."

Public Health England (PHE) East Midlands released a statement yesterday (Friday, July 26), saying it was investigating the reports.

And a statement on Melton Borough Council's website confirmed that the water play area at the theme park would be closed until further notice.

The statement from PHE read: "PHE is currently investigating reports that a number of visitors to Twinlakes Family Theme Park, in Melton Mowbray, are experiencing diarrhoea and vomiting.

"PHE East Midlands health and safety executive and Melton Borough Council are working with the theme park to investigate the reports and ensure that any necessary public health actions are taken.

"As a precautionary measure, the water play area will be closed until further notice."

Dr Vanessa MacGregor, consultant of communicable disease control at Public Health England, said: "Gastroenteritis (diarrhoea and vomiting) is an unpleasant illness but most people usually make a complete recovery without any specific treatment other than rest and drinking lots of fluids to avoid dehydration.

“There is no specific treatment for diarrhoea and vomiting. so the public can help limit the spread of infection by staying away from their GP practice or hospital if they are feeling unwell.

"If diarrhoea and vomiting does become very severe and persistent. however, then we advise you to telephone NHS 111 or your GP."
