An online campaign has been launched to save a homeless man who is "likely to die" from serious health conditions unless he is given help soon.

The crowdfunding push has been set up to give Pete urgent care - without which he is said to face death on the streets of Birmingham.

Pete suffers from conditions including HIV, hepatitis C, pneumonia, renal problems and weeping abscesses, his friend Luke Trainor said.

Luke is the brother of Birmingham MP Jess Philips, who gave the appeal a boost on Twitter, telling her followers: "My brother who was street homeless is raising money for an old friend.

Homelessness is a constant reality on the streets of Birmingham

"Please help if you can. Get Pete the care he desperately needs."

In his appeal on GoFundMe, Luke said:  "Please help me to raise money for my dear friend Pete who unless he receives care soon, is likely to die on the streets of Birmingham.

"Pete is lovely guy with a huge heart but he didn't have the easiest ride in life.

"Pete has been street homeless for many years and his last stretch of this dreadful predicament has left him dangerously unwell.

"Pete has H.I.V hepatitis C, Pneumonia, Renal problems and weeping abscesses among other things."

So far, the appeal has raised £840 of its £2,000 goal., and can be viewed here.

Launched by Luke, it is headed 'Get Pete the care he desperately needs' and has received donations from 49 people in 23 hours.

A string of deaths of homeless people, including several where rough sleepers had perished in freezing temperatures, have led to calls for action in and around Birmingham city centre over the past couple of years.

In the appeal, Luke continued: "Austerity measures carried out by callous ideology and cruel indifference mean that Pete is not receiving anywhere near the care he needs. I have spoken to a friend who is the manager of a residential service that can give Pete the care he desperately needs and he has agreed that if I can raise £2000, the organisation will cover the rest.

Urgent appeal: The plea to save homeless Pete on GoFundMe

"We have all seen the horrendous rise in homeless people on the streets of our cities and no doubt wondered what can be done.

"Please give generously to this cause today so that not only can Pete receive the care he needs but so that we as a people can send a message to the lawmakers that if they don't act, we will!

"Maybe soon they will realise that something needs to be done but for now let's not let another person die on our streets

No further details were given about Pete but a picture showed him appearing happy and smiling.

Birmingham Live has contacted Luke for further comment.

Donor Jenny Huggett said in a comment: "I hope you reach your target.

"So many people in desperate need of support and help.

"There but for the grace of God go I. Best of luck!"
