A £170k-a-year top boss has been axed by Birmingham City Council after her post was 'deleted'.

Angela Probert, the chief operating officer for strategic services, had worked for the authority for around three years and had once briefly stepped up to chief executive following the departure of Mark Rogers in 2017 and preceding the arrival of Stella Manzie.

She oversaw human resources, policy, procurement, information communication technology, communications and customer services.

Ms Probert confirmed she formally left the authority on Friday (February 15) and said: "The city council is on a journey of change and after three years in post, it is time for me to look for new opportunities.

"I remain passionate about public service and local government and wish the council well in the next phase of improvement.

"I leave behind some talented colleagues and wish to thank them and elected members for their support and commitment during my time with BCC."

Ms Probert began her career in local government at Sheffield City Council but arrived to Birmingham from Nottingham City Council where she was strategic director for organisational transformation and oversaw £55m worth of cuts in four years at the authority.

According to Birmingham's published statement of accounts for last year she picked up £146,131 in salary, fees and allowances with contributions to her pension worth £22,358, totalling £168,489.

The cash-strapped authority has had to cut hundreds of millions from its budget in the last decade largely due to reductions in government funding and needs to save £85m between now and 2022/23.

Council leader Ian Ward (Lab, Shard End) said: “I want to thank Angela for her leadership and commitment to Birmingham over the last three years and for driving improvements across our services.

"At a time of substantial challenge and change for the council we are restructuring the senior officer team and sadly the Chief Operating Officer post has been deleted.

"I thank Angela for her contribution and wish her well in her future career."
