Ambulances and fire engines raced to Birmingham city centre on Tuesday morning.

Emergency crews were mobilised on after a worker had an accident at a city building site in Bridge Street, opposite the Hyatt Hotel at around 8.39am.

The man was reported as having fallen from the sixth floor - though West Midlands Ambulance Service said the city centre incident was not as serious as they first thought.

The force said that on arrival they discovered it was a man who was on the sixth level who had fallen over.

Pictures taken by workers in nearby office blocks show the scene.

There were ambulances, a paramedic car and police vehicles there.

A spokesman for West Midlands Ambulance Service said:"We received a call at 8.39am to a building site opposite the Hyatt Hotel," he said.

"We were told it was a man in his 40s who had fallen six floors.

"However, when we got there we discovered it was a man who was on the sixth level who had fallen over.

"He suffered injuries to his ankle."

He said because the incident was on a building site and involved heights, the HART (hazardous area response team) Team was mobilised.

These are a group of paramedics with advanced skills and equipment.

"Although the man wasn't as badly injured as we first thought, because we had to bring him down from the sixth floor, we needed the HART Team's expertise and specialist equipment, " the spokesman said.

West Midlands Fire Service was also sent to the scene.

In a Tweet, the brigade said: " Our Technical Rescue team and Ladywood crew are with the ambulance service at an incident on Bridge Street in Birmingham.

"A man has suffered an leg fracture on the 6th floor of a building.

"We are working to get the man safely to ground level, good progress is being made."

Nearby workers told BirminghamLive how the drama unfolded.

One said: "I heard a massive bang at bottom of Broad Street .

"And then a stream of ambulances flew down Broad Street right next to the new HSBC building."
