A murder investigation is underway after a boy, aged just five, died in a house fire.

The youngster died in hospital in the early hours of yesterday after the harrowing house fire in Rugby back in November 2018.

The blaze left two other children and a woman also injured.

Two people arrested on suspicion of arson are on bail until April, Warwickshire Police said.

A 21-year-old man from Rugby was arrested the same day as the incident.

A 28-year-old woman from Rugby was arrested in January.

Detective Inspector Teresa McKenna, from the Warwickshire Police Major Investigation Unit, said: "We're sad to report that the boy injured in the fire has died and as a result this has now become a murder investigation.

"We remain committed to establishing the exact circumstances leading up to the fire and continue to appeal to the public for any information that could help with our investigation."

A Warwickshire Fire and Rescue spokesperson said: "At approximately 02:48 on the morning of November 15, Warwickshire Fire and Rescue Service (WFRS) crews from Rugby and Southam were called to a property fire in the Overslade area of Rugby.

"Crews from Rugby were in attendance within minutes of the call and were faced with a well-developed property fire.

"Both police and ambulance attended and supported fire crews at the incident.

"One adult and three children were conveyed to hospital following the incident.

"The fire was quickly extinguished and the scene made secure."
