National Express bus bosses are investigating after a passerby took a picture allegedly showing a "completely bald" tyre on a double decker in Birmingham city centre rush hour traffic.

The bus was driving between Curzon Street and Lawley Middleway when the snap was taken at around 5pm on Wednesday, February 20.

The bus company was quick to respond to the claims and said it was now investigating.

A spokesman for the service said in a tweet: "I am concerned to hear this as safety is a priority for us.

"We will have this passed on immediately for further investigation, once again we thank you for bringing this to our attention."

National Express added that it would be double checking the tyres on this bus when it returned to the garage on Thursday night.

A spokeswoman for the company said in a later statement: "The photo doesn't show any evidence to support this claim - it only displays the tyre wall.

"This vehicle passed its inspection on the 31 January 2019, when the tread depth measured was well within compliance.

"Michelin also inspected the tyres on 10 February 2019 and found all the tyres were within legal tolerances.

"National Express West Midlands takes safety extremely seriously, so we will double check the tyres when the bus returns to its garage tonight."
