Tributes have been paid to a stabbing victim who was pronounced dead after suffering a leg wound during a fight involving up to seven men.

The man, named as "Manny" on floral tributes left at the scene in Tile Hill, Coventry, has yet to be formally identified by West Midlands Police but was aged in his early 20s.

Police were called at 2.30pm on Wednesday to reports of violence in gardens behind Franklin Grove, shortly after several men were seen running across Tile Hill Lane.

A former assistant police and crime commissioner for the West Midlands, Lynnette Kelly, said she was saddened to hear that yet another young man had died as a result of a stabbing in the city.

The Coventry city councillor added: "This young man went to school with one of my children, and I know that his family and friends will be devastated at his loss.

"We really must have more done to tackle knife crime. Some young people don't realise that just one wound can kill.

"They think stabbing someone in the arm or leg will hurt, that it will send a message, but the reality is that there are major arteries in the arms and legs, and if you cut one of those the person will bleed out very quickly and die unless there is medical attention within a short period of time."

Flowers left at the scene

Urging parents to talk to children about the dangers of carrying knives and to read a leaflet on knife crime issued by police locally, the councillor added: "This isn't something the police can tackle alone, we all must work together - police, councils, schools, the health service, and the voluntary sector, and of course parents."

The owner of Coventry's Toe-2-Toe Boxing Academy, Leighton Brady, said the victim had trained at his gym but had not visited in recent months.

Describing him as very talented, Mr Brady said: "He fought for us a couple of times about a year ago. He was a lovely lad and everyone is really cut up about it."

Flowers near the scene

Senior investigating officer Detective Inspector Nick Barnes said: "Clearly the investigation is at an early stage but we have already made good progress and spoken to a number of potentially key witnesses.

"We understand a group of around six or seven young men were fighting in rear gardens off Franklin Grove when one suffered the fatal stab wound.

"I would urge anyone who was in the area at the time and saw what happened, or people making off from the scene, to get in touch as they may have seen something important."
