A Birmingham City University lecturer has paid tribute to "tenacious" journalist Lyra McKee.

Paul Bradshaw taught the 29-year-old on her Masters programme at Birmingham City University and described her death as "devastating".

The investigative journalist was "caught in crossfire" and shot in the head when a gunman fired shots at police in Northern Ireland, in what's being treated as a "terrorist incident".

Two teenagers have been arrested by police in connection with her murder.

The men, aged 18 and 19, were detained under anti-terrorism legislation and taken to a police station in Belfast for questioning, the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) said.

Mr Bradshaw described his former student in a blog post as "tenacious, a fighter, passionate about journalism, and full of love for her family and partner."

He detailed how she had crowdfunded in order to investigate the unsolved murder of a politician, and wasn't deterred when one editor told her she hadn't "paid her dues".

He also shared a video of a her talk in 2017 at TEDxStormontWomen where she talked about LGBTQ rights and how uncomfortable conversations can save lives.

He wrote: "I’m angry that we’ll never get to see what she would have done next, so I watch that video, thinking about what she achieved in those 10 years, and how happy she was. And I will miss her."

Lyra McKee

It comes as a memorial fund set up in her memory passed £50,000, just a day after it was set up to raise money for funeral expenses and for her family to decide on her legacy.

Paul wasn't the only Birmingham City University tutor to pay tribute to Lyra McKee.

Sarah Jones, Head of Media, tweeted: "It breaks my heart when you hear about the death of a journalist. This one even more so as a @BCUMedia @MyBCU Alumni. @LyraMcKee was an incredible and brilliant investigative journalist, dedicated and passionate about reporting in NI."

Dave Harte, Associate Professor in Journalism and Media Studies, said: "Oh my God. What awful news to wake up to about Lyra, a former @BCUmedia student. She was brilliant. This is horrific."

Marverine Cole, BA Journalism Course Director, wrote on Twitter: "Horrified to read this morning that the incredible and brilliant investigative journalist that is @LyraMcKee was shot dead in Derry last night. I met her once: she entranced the room. Her dedication to telling the truths of people in NI was unsurpassed. God rest her soul."

The protest where journalist Lyra McKee was killed

Police believe the violence in Derry on Thursday night was orchestrated in response to an earlier search by officers aimed at averting imminent trouble associated with this week's anniversary of the Easter Rising.

Around 50 petrol bombs were thrown in the confrontation and two cars were burned out.

Ms McKee had recently moved to Derry to live with "love of her life" Sara Canning and was also an editor for California-based news site Mediagazer, a trade publication covering the media industry.

In 2016, Forbes Magazine named her one of their 30 under 30 in media and she was working on a book due to be published in 2020.

Ms Canning said the Belfast-born journalist's "amazing potential was snuffed out by this single barbaric act".
