A fire that broke out in a 32 storey block of flats in Birmingham city centre last night was accidental.

West Midlands Fire said it was not investigating the incident further after the blaze took hold at Clydesdale Tower in Holloway Head at around 10pm on Saturday (April 20).

A total of 35 fire crew were fighting the flames at its height with ambulance, police and West Midlands HART team also at the scene.

There were no injuries and the fire, which took hold on the 16th floor, was put out at just after midnight.

Station Commander Alex Shapland told Birmingham Live: "The fire is being treated as accidental.

"It is not being treated as suspicious and no further investigation is being carried out.

"The first fire appliance arrived at the incident three minutes and 44 seconds after it was called and at its most dynamic stage, there were a total of 35 firefighters in attendance including a hydraulic platform."

He added: "The fire service quickly brought the fire under control with safe, effective and assertive fire-fighting.

West Midlands Fire Service  tweeted last night: "We are currently dealing with a High Rise Fire at Clydesdale Tower in Birmingham and have a number of resources in attendance."

West Midlands Ambulance HART team said: "Multiple @OFFICIALWMAS assets responded to this incident including HART where fire broke out on the 16th floor of a tower block.


"All of our staff have now stood down thanks to a quick response from @WestMidsFire colleagues to extinguish the fire & proactively manage incident."

Clydesdale Tower and its near-neighbour, Cleveland Tower, are collectively called The Sentinels.

Both are said to be 31-storeys tall and were part of the post-war construction boom which saw high-rise living take off in Birmingham and across the country.
