A schoolgirl was threatened by armed masked thugs who smashed down doors to storm her family's home in one of Birmingham's most exclusive locations.

The 13-year-old was threatened with a knife as the thugs, who were wearing balaclavas, burst into the address in Westbourne Road, Edgbaston, just after 7.20pm on Wednesday.

They smashed through French doors at the back of the home and confronted the girl before searching the property and escaping.

It was not known if they stole anything.

The details emerged in an alert from police.

Sgt Pete Sandhu, of the West Midlands force, told residents that "home-invasion" offences were rare in the area

He said: "Last night at approx 7:23pm 12/12/18 a robbery took place at an address in Westbourne Road, Edgbaston.

"The offenders, described as two males wearing balaclavas, gained access to the property by smashing the rear french doors.
