Uber passengers in Birmingham have had their say after a passenger claimed he had been taken the 'long way home' - costing him £50.

The customer was left livid after claiming the taxi firm tripled his charge home from Birmingham Airport - after taking a huge diversion.

He hit out after claiming the driver took him from the airport to his home in Sutton Coldfield via COVENTRY.

His home town is just 12 miles north of the airport.

But some social media users had no sympathy, with one writing: "Hm. Something doesn't add up here. It gives you a fare when you begin the journey."

A second added: "All you need to do is review my fair. As easy as that.

"Uber reimburse all that sort of extra charges, all he needs is to press "review my fare" option in the app," another wrote.

But others backed the passenger.

On Facebook, Rebekah Billington wrote: "Uber quoted 35-45 for a trip I then got for £11 with a local company. Absolute rip off."

And Owen Oj Iliffe also commented on Facebook, telling his fellow Brummies: "Simple answer - don't use Uber!"

Chad Blake, meanwhile, chipped in with: "It's daylight robbery - it's a stick up!"

Sammy Neale added: "Hence the reason why I stopped using them. They say one price then charge another!! Twice charged double but rang & complained and did get refunded."

The passenger claims he was first driven miles out of his way into into Coventry before finally reaching his destination.

And the late-night drive - which he says usually costs just £25 - was tripled to £75 to account.

George took to Twitter to vent his anger to Uber after the trip on Monday August 12.

He said: "Gotta love it when an @Uber driver drives from Birmingham Airport to Sutton Coldfield VIA COVENTRY???

"£25 fare and he charged £75. Disgusting scumbags."

Jeanette Bardell, meanwhile, urged her fellow city residents: "Yes stick to local firm. Don't know how Birmingham council allowed them a operators licence."

Nikkala Nend agreed, chipping in with: "Nothing new there... taxi drivers always doing it!"

Stewart Mclaren added: "That's why we use Star Cars. Never any issue here."

Roy Stokes wrote: "Uber charged my work colleague £70 for car cleaning as she was accused of throwing up in the back. A complete lie."

The furious passenger shared an image of his trip details, which were viewed in the Uber app following the journey at around 10.20pm.

The route of the trip can clearly be seen in the image, including how the driver looped round Coventry before returning the passenger home to Sutton.

Uber Support responded to his tweet, saying: "We're sorry to hear this was your experience, @georgeg147 .

"Kindly send us a DM of the phone number connected to your account, so we can further assist."

An Uber spokeswoman added: “We are always happy review a trip if there are concerns about the route taken, and provide a fare adjustment where appropriate."

Shanice Martina wrote: "Just get Google maps on, find the best route and say the route you prefer. You'll see if they're going the long way on it!"

Veronica Smith agreed, saying: "That don't surprise me. I've had it done to me with other taxi firms!"

Yvonne Hughes added: "Uber are a rip off. We were scammed driving around Birmingham city centre. I think they know exactly where they're going to increase their fare! Scammers. Stick to local firm."

Amber Hewitt wrote: "A lot of the drivers choose the ‘scenic’ route unless you tell them!"
