It is criminally cold and wet.

But, while most of us are praying for an end to the rain, the torrential downpours have brought a big smile to the faces of West Midlands Police officers.

The heavy rain seems to be keeping criminals in check as they decide the only thing worth going outside equipped with is an umbrella.

Force Response tweeted: “The radio falls silent as everyone’s favourite PC arrives in Birmingham.

“PC Rain does more to deter crime then any task force in history. On a serious note drive safely out there conditions are going to get tough !”

Officers at Acocks Green Police were also praising PC Rain's efforts.

They tweeted: "PC Rain is assisting some of the team who are out and about on patrol in deterring crime today . So whilst it rains we are putting in place some search warrants ."

But the heavy rain has brought widespread travel disruption to Birmingham and the Black Country all day.

Nearly ten fire fighters cut a man free from his car following a collision on Pershore Road in Edgbaston just after 1.35pm.

Another man managed to free himself from another car and the road was closed for nearly an hour while crews dealt with the incident in the relentless rain.

Flood warnings have been issued around the region as residents living near main rivers were warned to prepare for the possibility of burst banks.

A warning said: “River levels are forecast to rise at the Brookvale Road river gauge as a result of persistent heavy rainfall.

“Consequently, flooding of roads and farmland is possible to begin within the next few hours.

“Flooding is affecting low-lying land and roads adjacent to the River Tame between Horseley Heath and Castle Vale and the Ford Brook between Walsall and Bescot.”

Fans wait for the rain to stop during day four of the Nature Valley Open at Nottingham Tennis Centre.

The A38 Kingsbury Road Eastbound between Forge Lane and Midpoint Boulevard is also flooded underneath the railway bridge but traffic is still managing to get through.

But like their colleagues, Warwickshire Police were determined to bring some humour to the miserable conditions.

They tweeted: “If you are just waking up to the weather warning/trees down reports, we can confirm it is the month of June, and we are considering submitting a missing report for the season known as ‘Summer’. Drive safe everyone !”
