The future of a pub is under threat following a string of violent and drug-related incidents.

West Midlands Police has called for a licence review of The Sutton Tap in Sutton Coldfield.

The force has requested Birmingham City Council consider 'all options' which could mean revocation, stripping it of its right to sell alcohol.

They stated incidents of crime have notably increased at the venue on South Parade, formerly the Talk of the Town, since new management DG Entertainment took over in December 2017.

A report, prepared ahead of a council licensing hearing on Monday (February 25), revealed that in 2018, there had been two thefts, seven reported assaults, seven reports of drug dealing and 11 incidents of disorder.

The force stated most of the trouble occurred in the early hours of the morning at weekends and occasionally involved door-staff as 'victims and offenders'.

Summarising incidents last year, following the takeover, police said: "There has been an increase in crime and disorder, anti-social behaviour and also a risk to public safety.

"There has been an increase in police attendance at this location, more crime recorded and an increase in police intelligence around drug dealing.

"Some of the reported incidents have also included door-staff as victims and offenders."

Officers have also faced 'obstruction' when trying to obtain statements or CCTV footage to investigate incidents.

Birmingham City Council could revoke the pub's licence following a rise in crime.

The force added: "It is quite evident that the management at the premises is inadequate and falls below the standard expected of responsible operators."

As well as revoking the licence the council has a number of other options open to them including imposing further conditions on the licence, excluding a certain activity from the licence such as providing late night refreshment, removing the designated premises supervisor, suspending the licence for up to three months or taking no action at all.
