Emergency services are dealing with an incident on the Midlands rail network this evening.

Birmingham New Street has confirmed trains to Sutton Coldfield and Lichfield are suspended.

Train tickets are valid on West Midlands buses for stations to Blake Street, the station added.

It is thought that the incident might be centred on Erdington station - with one eyewitness saying multiple ambulances and police were at the scene.

The story is developing and more information is emerging.

Network Rail confirmed: "Emergency services are dealing with an incident between Birmingham New Street and Lichfield Trent Valley, resulting in some lines being blocked.

"Trains may be cancelled or delayed by up to 60 minutes. Some stations between Aston and Lichfield Trent Valley. Disruption is expected until the end of the day."

Full BTP statement

A British Transport Police (BTP) spokesperson said:

BTP officers were called to the Erdington area Monday 5th November 2018 after a report that a person had been struck by a train.

Officers from the BTP attended the incident, which was reported to BTP at 20:58 hrs and is currently being treated as non -suspicious. Ambulance service also attended but the Person was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Officers are currently working to establish the identity of the person, and inform their next of kin.

A file will be prepared for the Coroner.
