The EFL have released a statement to clarify reports suggesting West Bromwich Albion and Leeds United's remaining matches could be played at neutral venues.

The Championship are hoping to follow the Premier League's lead and restart their season next month, but a clear plan hasn't yet been released by the EFL.

Second tier clubs returned to training this week and it's understood that the majority are determined to play out the remaining nine games.

The plan to resume, backed by top two Leeds and Albion, has received some opposition, most notably from Hull City who have sent two letters to the EFL asking for the campaign to be curtailed.

But Hull's calls are set to be ignored with further talks planned about the season's resumption in the coming week.

However, a report in the national press has claimed that Albion and Leeds could face playing out their remaining matches at neutral venues in order to avoid supporters congregating outside stadiums.

It's a plan which has supposedly been put to Premier League champions elect Liverpool too, but supporters of Albion and Leeds reacted badly to the news.

"There’s too much at stake, can’t have different rules for different teams. Totally unfair," said one fan.

Another added: "This is a real issue. I know Leeds and West Brom are several points clear but for those two teams to play home games at neutral venues isn’t reasonable. It’s ridiculous to penalise a team because they have passionate fans!"

The EFL has now responded to fans' concerns and revealed their intention to allow Albion and Leeds to complete their fixture lists as normal.

An EFL spokesman said: “It remains our intention to play all remaining league matches at clubs’ home grounds as long as they comply with the relevant government guidelines.

“We will only seek to move matches if they are not permitted by the relevant local authority, following any representations from the local police force.”
