Charlton Athletic boss Lee Bowyer is hoping that David Davis can be persuaded into returning to full training after the on loan midfielder declined the invitation of group training this week.

Davis, who joined the Addicks on loan from Birmingham City in January for the remainder of the season, had indicated that he is still self isolating amid concerns that it remains unsafe to resume football.

The combative midfielder is the only player in Bowyer’s Charlton squad who has decided against returning to the club’s training ground as players look to get back into the swing of things ahead of a prospective resumption of the league campaign.

Charlton, who currently sit in the relegation zone - though it is the only point in the entire season in which they’ve found themselves in the bottom three - have tested all players and staff for coronavirus and all have returned negative results.

Bowyer, a former Blues midfielder himself, hopes that Davis will make his return sooner rather than later.

“Davis is on loan from Birmingham and he’s saying he doesn’t want to come back because London is not very safe. He has a young kid and he’s saying he doesn’t want to come back. That’s his choice,” he told the Evening Standard.

“I spoke to him on Sunday and he said he didn’t want to come back because of the situation in London. I think London is one of the safest areas at the moment – we’re in a much better place than we were a few weeks ago and it [the virus] seems to be further up north now. It’s his decision.

“I gave all the players a decision if they want to come back to train and play. He was the one that declined. It’s his decision, I respect that.”

To date, Davis has played five matches for Charlton, who will be hoping to avoid an immediate return to League One.
