Blues make decisions on three players

Birmingham City have decided to release David Stockdale and Cheick Keita at the end of their contracts.

Stockdale, 34, was among a host of costly arrivals in the summer of 2017 whilst Harry Redknapp was in charge but he’s barely featured for Blues in the past two seasons.

Once highly-rated full-back Keita has also departed having failed to make a single appearance this season. Keita was signed by Gianfranco Zola in January 2017 but he leaves having played just 11 games for Blues.

Blues have also decided against extending the loan of Swansea City winger Jefferson Montero.

Bellingham pays tribute to Stockdale

Having been sent to train with the youngsters by former boss Garry Monk, Stockdale was able to watch Jude Bellingham's development closely.

The stopper has been a vocal supporter of the teenager during his stunning breakthrough campaign under Pep Clotet.

And Bellingham took to Twitter to say: "Can’t thank you enough for everything big man!" adding a series of blue heart emojis and a picture of the pair.

Stockdale replied: "Anytime bro, got more time to watch you now".

Barnsley cite Blues case and others in letter to EFL

Barnsley have written a letter to the EFL making it clear they will not accept relegation if the season is curtailed.

The Guardian have obtained the letter sent on behalf of Barnsley's board, who warn they will oppose relegation - in the event the campaign is cut short - because of outstanding financial disciplinary hearings for other Championship clubs including Birmingham City.

Barnsley are concerned ongoing cases with Blues, Derby County and Sheffield Wednesday will not be resolved until next season, by which time the Tykes are likely to have lost their status as a Championship side.

The Oakwell club are currently bottom of the table – seven points from safety – but implicit in their argument is the possibility that could change if an independent panel decides to deduct points from other teams.

Huddersfield boss warns of financial disaster

Huddersfield Town owner Phil Hodgkinson has warned that “50 or 60 clubs” could go bust unless football starts to plan for the financial impact of Covid-19 beyond the 2019/20 season.

England's second-tier remains hopeful of returning to action, with players set to return for training in small groups today, as seen with the Premier League last week.

With nine matches left to be played by each club, there remains a strong desire from Championship clubs to ensure the season is completed.

However, all those remaining games are likely to be played behind closed doors, while the idea of playing the whole 2020/21 season without fans being in attendance is also being mooted.
