Birmingham City midfielder David Davis has revealed he had serious doubts ahead of his return to competitive action.

The former Wolves midfielder made his long awaited return to St Andrews during the disappointing defeat to Bolton last time out.

It was Davis' first action of the season after fracturing his ankle in pre-season.

Speaking to the club's official site , Davis said: “I can’t put it into words, what it means to be back at this point. It feels like a blessing really, but it’s the hard work but it’s the hard work and everything that the staff have invested and I have invested that has got me back to this stage."

Asked how he felt before his return, the 28-year-old suggested he had some worries about the full implications of his long term injury.

“Obviously for the U23 games it was nerves, ‘can my ankle handle the pressures and the game?’ A lot of it is mental, I know I’m physically strong and capable so it was more a roller coaster really," Davis said.

“To get back on the pitch is a relief anyway, that’s the first step but there’s still a few more hurdles until I feel 100%.”

Although he himself admitted he struggled to adapt to the pace of the game against Bolton, his overriding emotion was one of relief.

“I felt like the game was about 100 miles an hour! But just to even be in contention, to be in squads, to be in and around the lads, at this stage it’s great and it’s a thing I can’t describe.

“To get back on the pitch is a big relief, but I know there’s still a lot more to come yet.”

Davis is now in contention for his first start of the season when Garry Monk's promotion chasers face Blackburn Rovers.
