Birmingham City have been warned by the Football Association over missile throwing – and have urged fans not to throw anything onto the pitch at home or away games.

In a statement on their website, Blues said they have received a warning from the governing body about items being thrown onto the field of play.

They urged the "small minority" to stop doing so amid the risk of "serious repercussions" from the FA.

As a result of the warning, drinks will no longer be served in bottles at St Andrew's.

The statement said: "All bottled drinks at the St. Andrew's Trillion Trophy Stadium are to be decanted into paper cups, until further notice. Please be aware that consequently queues at the kiosks will increase.

"This decision has not been taken lightly. However, it is vitally important that missiles are not thrown onto the pitch, which includes - and is not limited to - bottles, coins and flares.

"Not only is this very dangerous but any repeat in the future could cause serious repercussions for the Club from the FA.

"We know that such incidents are caused by a small minority of people. And we are equally certain that all true supporters understand this kind of behaviour cannot be tolerated."

Blues face Blackburn Rovers at St Andrew's this weekend, two weeks before the home derby against Aston Villa, in which last season some of the clapper-boards given to fans - designed to boost the atmosphere - were thrown onto the pitch.

Garry Monk's men have away games at Bristol City and Hull City in between.
