Our take on the situation

Birmingham City and stability. Words that simply do not belong in a sentence together, writes Shane Ireland.

We’re here yet again. A pragmatic, sensible, well-liked manager potentially leaving St Andrew’s.

Yet again, the powers at be at Blues could be taking a risk that is wholly unnecessary with Garry Monk’s future at the club in serious doubt.

The 40-year-old, who has repaired, re-worked and re-energised a club left seriously fractured after Steve Cotterill’s disastrous tenure, could soon be set to depart, eliminating the progress that has been made in the last 15 months.

Do they not remember where Blues were then? Obviously not. Well, here’s a reminder.

Blues were staring relegation in the face. Just 30 points from 35 matches had been collected under two different managers, they were in 22nd place and had played one more game then most of their relegation rivals.

Thinking ahead

Coventry City will play the majority of their ‘home’ fixtures at St Andrew’s on Saturday afternoons next season.

The EFL fixtures for the upcoming campaign are released on Thursday, June 20 and Birmingham City have been 'paired' with the Sky Blues who are renting the ground.

That means Blues will play at home on weekends when Coventry are away and vice versa, avoiding clashes which could have seen the League One side's matches moved to Fridays or Sundays.

That would have severely limited the recovery time for the pitch between games and potentially impacted on supporters' travel plans.

A message to the club

A Birmingham City supporters group has reacted with dismay to news of difficulties between Garry Monk and the club’s board.

The Blues Trust have released a statement calling for ‘sensible reflection’ on the progress the team and club have made since Monk was appointed in March 2018.

Since succeeding Steve Cotterill, Monk engineered a salvage operation at the end of the 2017/2018 campaign.

Last term he kept the club 12 points clear of the drop zone - despite losing nine for breaching the EFL’s FFP rules.

The Trust urged directors to ‘do what is right for the Club’.
