A new BBC drama has taken over a busy Birmingham street today as part of the principal photography shoot.

Onlookers saw glimpses of outdoor shots being filmed for Dark Mon£y in front of the Hotel Du Vin on Church Street.

The series, although set in London, has mostly been filmed in and around Birmingham over the last few months.

A member of the production's crew said: "We have been filming in the West Midlands for the last few months, lots of people have come up to talk to us about what we're doing and showing they're interested.

"The crew have already done filming around some big London landmarks, and now we're doing some more up-close building shots with nice facades like the one today."

This area of Birmingham is a hotspot for film makers - with Girl with All the Gifts and Kingsman: The Golden Circle being filmed here in recent years. Steven Spielberg also filmed parts of Ready Player One in the city in 2016.

Dark Mon£y was also spotted being filmed in Solihull in late October.

In Dark Mon£y viewers will see 'an ordinary London family decide to accept a substantial pay-off from a renowned filmmaker to keep silent about the abuse of their youngest son'.

As the series continues, the family's life spirals out of control while trying to erase the memories of the past, as the 'price of taking the money may be very high'.

The cast includes Babou Ceesay and Jill Halfpenny as the parents in the Mensah family, and was written by the Bafta-nominated writer Levi David Addai.

Ceesay and David Addai have previously worked together on the BBC One film Damilola, Our Loved Boy in 2016.

David Addai said: “I'm delighted to be working with Babou again and thrilled to have Jill on board. They lead a fantastic cast.”

Ceesay said: "I’m delighted to be heading back to the BBC for Dark Mon£y and to be reunited with Levi to tell this powerful story.

"I’m also looking forward to collaborating with Jill, Lewis and the team”.

The four-part drama is set to premiere in spring 2019.
