Birmingham's hospitality trade is arguably the hardest hit by the coronavirus and resulting lockdown.

But our brave city independents have been fighting back.

Phil Innes owns Loki Wine Merchants - who has two city shops - in Great Western Arcade and Edgbaston.

"This has been a living nightmare for so many businesses -  but it's also been a time of having to think about creative ways to get through this challenging period," he told us.

"We acted very fast - when the shutdown was announced. We totally overhauled our website - to focus on online sales - to get cash into the business.

"But as well as deliveries,  we also started offering wine and cheese tastings online. I had never done anything like that before - and we've had a fantastic response.

"So many our customers have told us that they had always fancied attending our wine tastings in the shops and were unable to do so due to childcare or other commitments.

"That's been a great learning and when we are eventually able to open the shops,   we will continue the events online for sure.

"It's also been amazing to see how much support Brummies genuinely have for independents like us."

Here are the brilliant ways Birmingham pubs, bars and music venues have adapted to lockdown life.

Pre bottled cocktails delivered straight to your door

Pre-mixed bottles of cocktails - with a 7 - 14 day shelf life delivered to your door

Voted one of the best 20 bars in the world by The Telegraph, This Stirchley bar sells their expertly made cocktails  pre mixed and delivered to your door in bottles. Cocktails available are Negroni, Mother's Little Helper, The Gambler, Englishman in New York and Bamboleo.

Co-owner Katie Rouse told BirminghamLive: "We do two bottle sizes, available in four serves and six serves and with a seven-14 day shelf life.

"It’s hard to be stuck in the house when every one is missing their favourite food and drink, and it’s a nice treat to get this delivered to your door.

"This way we have revenue coming through the business -  to retain our staff and to keep up with payments that we either can’t defer or would prefer not to defer.

"I think a lot of bars have been very innovative so far with their drinks selections, there’s a lot of great options out there, and we’re doing our best to keep things exciting each fortnight with new specials.

"We’ll keep adapting the best we can as the crisis continues. July 1 is the earliest date for hospitality venues to open, but as a very small bar, I very much doubt we’ll be able to adhere to the guidelines. Until it's safe for us to open we will continue with this service.

Pick up a pint - in disposable cups  ( JQ locals only)

1000 Trades is now 1000 takeouts

JQ boozer 1000 Trades,  named in Observer Monthly Food Awards 2019 as the best place to drink in Britain has rebranded itself as 1000 Takeouts.

The business is now offering a takeaway service for food and alcohol.  Food available includes Tandoori spiced fish and chips, burgers and burritos.

A range of craft beers, natural wine and draft beers are also on the menu.  Walk-ins are possible on drinks – but only two people at a time, and of course least two metres apart.

Their bottles and cans list is listed here, all at a third off. Limited draft beer also available at 20% off in one-pint cups - with holders available - for JQ locals only.

Co-owner John Stapleton told us: "We are only open to pick up pints in cups - for the JQ community only.

"The great thing about running 1000 Trades over the past three years is that we are part of the community - so we pretty much know everyone. We want people to stay safe so so will not serve anyone who has come from out of the area.

And how is business during this time?

"We adapted quickly - and that helped, " John told us. "We also benefit from being one of the few places around the area that is doing takeaway hot food.

"Our sector was on the most high profile early casualties of this whole thing and this has been reflected in Government support but it will also be the longest and one of the hardest hit. At the moment we're making the best out of a very bad situation.

"The community support has been overwhelming, which is really heart warming and is helping us get through it. "We have stayed open for them."

Available on UberEats and by collection.

Virtual Cheese and Wine tasting

Since lockdown,  award-winning Loki have been bringing the wine tasting experience to our houses.

Owner Phil Innes has helped set up weekly wine and cheese tasting sessions over Zoom.  The events  hosted by Phil, wine educator Paul Creamer and Will Johns, the owner of Anderson & Hill deli in Great Western Arcade,  so you enjoy a tasting with two wine experts and a cheese expert.

Tasting takes place every Saturday with different wines and cheeses featured every week.

You are asked to purchase the wine selection by ordering for delivery or clicking and collecting from Loki.

Phil told us: "I had no idea how this would work out! But having the three of us hosting has been a bonus. I take the role of interviewer and that works really well online.

"The last tasting had 180 people tune in and we were sold out. Usually people take part as couples or in pairs. Quite a few have children and they tell us they love feeling like they are having a nice evening out without worrying about babysitters.

Owner Phil Innes at his Loki wine merchant and tasting house in Edgbaston is now an online cheese and wine host

"We put the details of each event online eight days beforehand so people have time to get their wines from us - and buy the cheese from supermarkets and specialist shops. Anderson & Hill deliver within a five mile radius while Loki has a much wider radius. (We also deliver UK wide).

"I always make alternative suggestions on similar cheeses stocked by supermarkets that are easy to get hold of."

To take part the cost is £55 for three bottles delivered to your home. Or £65 for three bottles of wine and accompanying cheeses ( within a five mile radius of the city centre).

Loki deliver wines on Wednesdays to Solihull & surroundings, Thursday to Stourbridge & surroundings, and Friday to Sutton Coldfield. For more info and how to book go here

Old Crown print by artist Abbie Severn - only 36 available in the pub's new online shop

From next week, Birmingham's oldest pub, The Old Crown, will launch an online shop which will soon be selling merchandise from Beneculture streetwear and lauded satirist street artist  Foka Wolf.

Owner Ciaran Healy told us: "We're lucky in Digbeth that we have a very strong community where we do help each other out.  At the Old Crown we've got a good relationship with street artists such as Foka Wolf who has done work for us before.

"The online will also sell work from Abbie Severn and stock pieces from local artist Beth Nicol (Bethontowlegs).

"The online shop has meant we can be creative - and keep the Old Crown in people's minds - not just as a place to drink - but as a community hub."

The pub is also doing online deliveries.  Go here for more info.

Meanwhile close by, music venue The Night Owl has also opened up a online shops as well as selling vouchers on a crowdfunding page. Brummies can buy £25 vouchers for a pair of tickets and cocktails to any event of their choice - when it is safe to open up.

Arith Liyanage co-owner of The Night Owl said: "We are trying to come up with ways to innovate all the time. We know we have a regulars who will be back when we can open properly but in the meantime we thought 'what can we do?'

"The vouchers are a way of having money coming in now and our merchandise sales help.

"When we can open, there will still be strict social distancing so we'll look at ways of live streaming bands playing in the club for a very small fee.  During this period,  we've really found our feet testing the tech and we will continue improving that side of things. "

Gigs in your lounge

Sunflower Lounge has introduced 'Gig in your lounge'

Over lockdown this Brum music venue showcased some cool tunes - on its social channels.

Carlo Solazzo, owner of Birmingham Promoters  told us: "I promote venues and the Sunflower Lounge is known for its strong loyal following.  As soon as we got over the shock over lockdown, we decided to give the opportunity to artists and bands to take over Sunflower Lounge social channels - and live stream a 30 minute performance every day.

"While people are watching,  we encourage people to make a donation to our crowdfunding page and also raise funds for the NHS Covid -19 relief. It's a way of getting a bit of money coming in and also a way to give back to our community.

"We started it in early April.

"The response from artists has been amazing - as well as local bands, we've had national touring artists to submit applications to play. For many of them - its been their first ever experience of live streaming.

"Covid 19 has impacted live music badly, but for us it's also been an excellent opportunity to learn new ways of doing things."

Gig in ur Lounge streams live on the Sunflower Lounge Facebook Weekdays from 7pm. Weekends from 5pm. You can also watch past performances here.
