Alnwick is one of six players to have been informed their contracts at Ibrox will not be renewed.

Jordan Rossiter, who is currently on loan with Fleetwood Town, is also among those to depart.

The 23-year-old made 19 appearances for Joey Barton's side this season before suffering a knee injury in the game against Tranmere Rovers in November.

Andy Halliday, Jon Flanagan, Wes Foderingham and Jason Holt, who enjoyed a loan spell with Fleetwood during the 2018/19 campaign, have also been let go by the SPL side.

"We extend our gratitude and best wishes to all departing players," Rangers said in a statement.

Rangers boss Steven Gerrard added: “I want to recognise the contribution of the players who are leaving our squad at the end of this season.

“There is a lot more that people contribute to, away from the fixtures each weekend and I commend each of the departing players for what they have given to us day in and day out.

"Work continues on a daily basis in planning and preparation for next season.”

The announcement comes after the SPL was ended early due to the coronavirus pandemic, with Rangers' rivals Celtic being handed the league title.

As for Alnwick, his release frees him up to join the Seasiders on a free should Neil Critchley wish to snap him up.

The 26-year-old was Blackpool’s first-choice keeper this season until he injured his arm in the Boxing Day defeat to Accrington Stanley.

He was initially ruled out for three months but was still unavailable when the country went into lockdown.

While Simon Grayson was still in charge, Alnwick had been linked with a permanent switch to Blackpool during the January transfer window.

However, his untimely injury dashed any hopes of a permanent move south of the border at that point.

The Seasiders subsequently turned to Chris Maxwell, who was brought in on a short-term deal until the end of the season.

Blackpool and Alnwick reportedly discussed a pre-contract agreement, which would have seen the former Port Vale and Scunthorpe United shot-stopper sign for the club in July.

The picture was muddied even further when Grayson was sacked in February as it was Pool’s former manager who had been pushing for Alnwick to be signed permanently.

The former England Under-20 international started Blackpool’s first 22 League One fixtures of the campaign, conceding 24 goals and keeping seven clean sheets.

Alnwick joined Rangers in 2017 but has only made a handful of appearances.
