If any metric can capture the drop-off between the Eagles’ Super Bowl squad in 2017 and the Eagles the past two years, it’s their slow starts. This year’s Eagles have been behind at halftime five times, more than they were during their entire 19-game Super Bowl run in 2017. That year, the Eagles led the league in first-quarter score differential and were second to the Patriots in halftime score differential. In 2018, they ranked 22nd and 18th, respectively. This year is even worse, as the Eagles rank 26th in first-quarter score differential and 25th in halftime score margin. That was before this Cowboys shellacking.

I still like a lot of the pieces and I think DeSean’s return will help a lot. But the team has been disappointing overall and that’s beyond the absence of one or two players. I do think the Eagles ought to consider a youth movement. Put Darren Sproles on IR. Give his time to Boston Scott, who has flashed the last two weeks. Cut Vinny Curry. Play Josh Sweat and Daeshon Hall as your backup DEs. Sign a young DT to fill the spot. Cut Andrew Sendejo and give his spot to Avonte Maddox. Hopefully Cre’Von LeBlanc will return and he can replace Orlando Scandrick.

We were always taught to use the hop technique. So when you hop, it allows you to sink your hips and it kind of stops that defender’s momentum versus if you’re walking it back. The bull rush, if you start walking, he’ll just walk you right back into the quarterback. You never really sink your hips to stop the momentum.”

What’s ailed the Eagles? They need help in the secondary, and the offensive line hasn’t lived up to expectations, either. The former has been well-publicized (and likely to be addressed with an outside addition or two), the latter not as much (that one will like be handled internally).

Rush was a dominant force on the defensive line in the preseason, but instead of giving him a shot, the Raiders signed veteran defensive tackle Corey Liuget instead. Liuget was inactive due to injury the first three games of the season and has rotated in the past three games collecting 3 combined tackles and one QB hit. Standing out in camp is one thing. But the thing about players who shine in preseason is every other team gets a good look at them too. Rush was impressive enough that you figured it was only a matter of time before either the Raiders called him up or another team stole him away. It would have required an injury for the Raiders to make that move and their interior defensive line has been relatively healthy this season. So, Rush is headed to Philly instead.

Whatever Buffalo Bills fans thought being 5-1 would feel like, it doesn’t feel exactly like that. It’s less savory than expected. No one knew at the beginning of the 2019 season that the AFC would be such a top- and bottom-heavy conference. Only four AFC teams currently sit within one game in either direction of .500. That feels odd, although it may not be (I’m not digging through the record books to find previous years’ Week 7 standings). The point is it’s hard to know who you are in comparison of those around you if they’re all bad.

Much has been made of the stalemate between the Cowboys and quarterback Dak Prescott since owner Jerry Jones famously declared that a deal was “imminent” more than a month ago. However, it is not the only lingering contractual situation that appears to be going nowhere at this point. The Cowboys have made no progress with star corner Byron Jones on a new deal, sources said, and talks with receiver Amari Cooper have gained no traction, either, with his departure in 2020 becoming increasingly likely. The team originally figured that Jones would be the prime candidate for a 2020 franchise tag (potentially tagged as a safety, at a lower figure than corner, given Jones spent the first few years of his career as a safety). But with Prescott’s demands going beyond the massive deal the Cowboys have extended, Dallas may need to use the tag on the quarterback in 2020 at this point.
