On the day that Philadelphia Health Commissioner Thomas Farley reiterated that city COVID-19 restrictions likely will not allow the Eagles to host any fans at Lincoln Financial Field for the scheduled Sept. 20 home opener, defensive end Vinny Curry said the death of his half-brother from the virus made him think hard before signing to play another NFL season. Those developments were a reminder of the difficulty of what the Eagles and the NFL are trying to do in the midst of a pandemic that is without precedent in modern times. They also served as a counterpoint to more-optimistic developments — the team’s announcement earlier in the day that offensive lineman Jordan Mailata has returned from the COVID-19 restricted list, leaving no Eagles with that status, and coach Doug Pederson’s quick return to the team on Wednesday, after a 10-day absence following positive tests. Farley said on July 14 that guidelines in place at that time wouldn’t allow fans to be present at the Linc. The team has been hoping the virus situation would improve to where the city might at least allow some fans, but “it’s going to be unlikely that situation will change by Sept. 20,” Farley said Thursday. The Eagles are scheduled to host the Los Angeles Rams in their home opener.

The feeling here is that the Eagles shouldn’t be in a rush to extend Ertz at this point. He’s signed through 2021 so he has two years remaining on his current deal. It’s not like there’s a rush to get ahead of the market now that it has already been set so high. The Eagles should see how the 2020 season plays out. Maybe the Eagles look to trade Ertz in 2021 if Goedert shows he’s capable of handling an even bigger role. Or maybe the Eagles decide they should keep both — an outcome the organization internally believes is at least possible — if their 12 personnel package proves to be very successful. Gathering data from the upcoming campaign can help the team decide what to do after the year is over.

By the end of the season, the number of injuries that had mounted at wide receiver for the Eagles was almost comical — unless, of course, your name is Carson Wentz. A running back (Miles Sanders) led the team with 165 receiving yards on passes 20 or more yards downfield. Desean Jackson (who ran all of 38 routes all season) nearly matched that total, as well. After Jackson went down with injury, Philadelphia really didn’t have anyone who could challenge defenses deep. Reagor won’t only fill that deep threat role in 2020. He’ll also have a good chance of being the team’s top wide receiver in production by the end of the season. Don’t let the limited production in 2019 fool you; TCU quarterbacks notched the fourth-lowest rate of accurate passes of any Power Five program on the year. Reagor is faster than his 40-yard dash time at the combine, and he is as explosive as they come. That athleticism, combined with a willingness to attack the ball in contested catch situations, makes him the top deep threat in the class. Philadelphia will hope that a Reagor/Jackson pairing out wide will lead to significantly more big plays on offense this year.

Hurts will eventually be Carson Wentz’s backup quarterback, but the lack of an offseason program and the presence of Nate Sudfeld allows the Eagles to be patient. “The presence of Nate Sudfeld” is not a sentence that one would typically expect from an organization that fancies itself as a “quarterback factory.” Sudfeld’s experience in the offense (he’s been with the team since 2017, was the No. 2 quarterback in Super Bowl LII) made him desirable to re-sign in March with the uncertainty of the months ahead.

Wallace is smart, he’s athletic, he’s a winner, and he’s hungry. He is going to be fun to watch when the camp heats up on Monday with pads on and full-contact action. Can’t wait!

Before sustaining a concussion in a playoff loss to the Seahawks last year, Carson Wentz had a defining moment as he pushed an injury-ravaged roster into the playoffs amid an ugly race with the Cowboys for first place in the division. This roster has some serious holes, most notably at cornerback. This is a radically different group of signings, and you might want to throw in Greg Zeurlein. These are not players that have marginal chances to even make the roster. Four of them can be penciled in as starters, five if you count specialists, and Aldon Smith is hopefully going to become a key rotational piece after he has a few games to get back into shape. Now that Everson Griffen has joined the party, the Cowboys will almost certainly roll out a starting defensive line with only one returning player, DeMarcus Lawrence. And if you only were going to keep one of your starting DL from last season, he is a pretty decent choice.
