Preston GP Dr Lucy Delaney has launched a new podcast aimed at sharing her simple and understandable brand of medical advice with the public.

Dr Lucy, who currently works at a practice in Adlington, started The Uncomplicated Doctor after friends and family told her she should share her useful advice more widely.

Dr Lucy said: “I’d been thinking of starting a podcast for a while, but Covid-19 made me bite the bullet and do it. I’ve had a lot of close friends and family asking me for the facts, because there’s so much uncertainty and different information out there.

“That’s particularly the case on social media, where I think there’s an under-representation of clinical and medical voices. It’s not that sexy to talk about balanced arguments, but there are influencers giving harmful advice to thousands of followers so it’s important to get a more informed voice in that sphere.”

Dr Lucy says the podcast will cover topics that will be useful for a younger generation of listeners, but there will be a broad range of subjects to interest all age groups.

The first episode focusses on Covid-19, with Dr Lucy sharing straightforward guidance on children and the virus, face masks and immunity. She also chats with two frontline NHS workers, discussing their challenging experience of tackling the virus.

Planned future guests include the physiotherapist for the British Olympics gymnastics team, plus local consultants from areas including gynaecology and endocrinology.

Dr Lucy is keeping operations local, recording from home and working with friends to produce the podcast.

She said: “I’m lucky to be working with friends who happen to be quite talented at editing and producing. Matthew Gunther is the editor, and Daniele Baron is the producer. We’re all mucking in – I write the content and they help with the technical side.

“I’m sure this is the start of a very long learning curve, but the main aim is to make quality health education available to as many people as possible, and present it in a way that is entertaining and not intimidating.”
