A Raleigh, N.C., man was killed a single-vehicle accident on Interstate 20 westbound over the weekend.

William Jessup May, 36, was traveling west around 3 p.m Saturday in the outside lane near mile marker 191 at a high rate of speed. According to the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office, May moved to the inside lane to pass and drove onto the rumple strips, striking the south median guard rail.

May over-corrected to the right and traveled back across the outside lane and onto the shoulder until landing in a drainage ditch. The vehicle struck several trees until coming to a halt.

May was pronounced dead at the scene.
