PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Rhode Island lawmakers have introduced a bill that would allow New York Yankees fans to show team pride on their license plates.

WPRI-TV reports the special license plate would show the Yankees logo, and half of the proceeds from the $40 plate surcharge would go toward the team’s charitable foundation.

If the bill becomes law, the state Division of Motor Vehicles would start producing the plates if at least 900 pre-paid orders are placed.

State Rep. Gregg Amore, who co-sponsored the bill, says he’s among a fairly large group of Yankees fans in Rhode Island.

Amore says he isn’t worried about any political blowback from the majority Red Sox faithful in his state.
