Boston officer shot, suspect dead after gunfire exchanged during traffic stop in Roxbury

A Boston police officer was shot and wounded early Friday morning during a motor vehicle stop in Roxbury, and a male suspect was killed, according to police. Police Commissioner William Gross said the officer, a member of the department for one or two years, had been shot “several times” in the upper torso. Gross spoke to reporters outside Boston Medical Center, where the officer is being treated.The exchange of gunfire occurred around 2:21 a.m. when two officers conducted a motor vehicle stop at 102 Gerard St. “During that motor vehicle stop, a suspect exchanged several rounds of gunfire with the Boston police officers, resulting in an officer being shot several times,” Gross said. The vehicle then fled the scene, and Gross said it was located a few blocks away, near 90 George St., with the male suspect, identified only as being in his mid-to-late 30s, inside. “Unfortunately, he was pronounced deceased on scene,” Gross said. “A firearm was recovered from that suspect’s motor vehicle. At present it is a an active investigation.”Gross said he had spoken with Suffolk County District Attorney Rachael Rollins and that the investigation would be done collaboratively with her office and the Firearm Discharge Investigation team. He asked that anyone with any information contact the department at 1-800-494-TIPS.  “We’re actively canvassing the neighborhood for witnesses, video, anything that can help in this investigation,” he said.
