Officer shot twice in arm outside Massachusetts nightclub
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (AP) — A Massachusetts man is under arrest for allegedly shooting a Springfield Police officer in the arm outside a nightclub.
Twenty-five-year-old Kenneth Hernandez of Springfield was arrested early Sunday morning. He’s facing numerous charges, including two counts of assault with intent to murder and assault with a dangerous weapon.
Springfield Police said on Twitter that Officer Edwin Irizarry was shot twice in the arm on State Street. On the force since 2007, Irizarry is being treated at a hospital and is expected to recover.
Acting Police Commissioner Cheryl Clapprood tells WCVB-TV Hernandez walked to a vehicle and retrieved a .22-caliber gun. She says he fired at officers after they were shouting at him to show his hands. The gun was recovered.
It’s unclear if Hernandez has an attorney at this time.
