Deadline to register for Rhode Island’s primary is Sunday
Secretary of State Nellie Gorbea said eligible Rhode Island residents can register online at vote.ri.gov.
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — The deadline to register to vote in Rhode Island’s Sept. 8 primary is Sunday.
Secretary of State Nellie Gorbea said eligible residents can register online at vote.ri.gov. They can also download the form, print it out, and submit it to their local board of canvassers or other designated locations in their community, she said.
“Rhode Islanders have several options for voting safely and securely during the COVID-19 pandemic, but being registered is the first step,” Gorbea said in a statement. “Then, you can choose to either vote safely from home, vote early in-person at your city or town hall, or vote at a polling place on Primary Day.”
Rhode Islanders can check their voter registration status by using the Department of State’s Voter Information Center.
Gorbea also said the Aug. 11 is the deadline to disaffiliate from your political party in order to cast a ballot in another political party’s primary.
Unaffiliated or independent voters can vote in any primary, but voters affiliated with a specific party can only vote in their designated party’s primary.
Voting in a party’s primary also automatically enrolls a person in that party in Rhode Island, but voters can immediately disaffiliate.
