Maps: Here are the snowfall forecasts for Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont
Winter is already sneaking up on New England.
Accumulating snowfall is expected in northern New England this week, with the highest predicted totals in northernmost Maine, Vermont, and New Hampshire, according to the National Weather Service, which issued winter storm warnings for areas in all three states.
The northernmost parts of Maine could see eight to 12 inches of snow by the end of the day Tuesday, and the wind chill there could dip into the negatives. Snowfall elsewhere in Maine will likely be more moderate, with predictions ranging from zero to six inches.
“A light wintry mix will fall overnight and into tomorrow, with mostly snow across the northern mountains,” the National Weather Service of Gray, Maine, predicted Monday. “Far southern areas should be mostly rain with a little snow at the tail end. It all pushes offshore tomorrow shortly after sunset.”
The National Weather Service in Burlington, Vermont, expects up to 12 inches of snow in northern Vermont, with localized totals of 12 to 18 inches possible. Predictions for the state’s southern counties range from two to six inches.
“Travel will become difficult, especially across northern counties where the heaviest snow will fall,” forecasters said.
In New Hampshire, predicted accumulations mostly range from one to six inches, with the northern tip of the state looking at six to 12 inches.
