The fire broke out sometime after 5 a.m. and escalated quickly to a 3-alarm. Worcester Fire Deputy Chief Martin Dyer said two firefighters had minor injuries but were expected to be OK and as many as 16 people live in the 3-story building. Dyer said they believe everyone who was inside the building is accounted for but firefighters have not yet been able to safely sweep the building.
A frozen fire hydrant forced firefighters to switch from an interior attack on the fire to a defensive position on the outside, Dyer said.
The landlord says he believes the fire started in the kitchen of a second-floor unit. He claims the tenant waited too long, possibly up to 15 minutes, to report the fire.
This comes just days after 36-year-old Worcester firefighter Christopher Roy died in the line of duty battling a 5-alarm fire early Sunday morning on Lowell Street, rattling the fire department and communities across the state.
