CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — A man was hit and killed by a commuter rail train in Belmont on Monday morning, causing delays along the Fitchburg Line.

Service was back to normal with some residual delays in the early afternoon.

According to transportation officials, Fitchburg Line train 400 (4:50 a.m. from Wachusett) was stopped near Porter Square at around 6:30 a.m., triggering serious delays across the line.

Transit Police said a 21-year-old man had trespassed the right of way on the train tracks in Belmont on Brighton Street and was hit by an inbound train. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

Riders were told to either seek alternate transportation or expect delays of over one hour.

Outbound Fitchburg Line train 491 from North Station was canceled due to the disruptions caused on the line.
