Dylan Dreyer discusses her miscarriage, infertility to help ‘shed the stigma’

While Jenna Bush Hagar announced Monday that she’s expecting her third child, her “Today” show colleague had a much more difficult story to tell.

Meteorologist Dylan Dreyer tearfully revealed that she’d had a miscarriage and was experiencing secondary infertility after giving birth to her son Calvin, now 2½. She said she wanted to talk about her pregnancy struggle publicly to “help shed the stigma” of miscarriage.

“I’m blessed with the family that I have, but going through a miscarriage and not knowing what the future holds is emotional,” Dreyer, 37, said in a video segment, before sitting down for an interview along with her husband, Brian Fichera, and infertility specialist Dr. David Reichman. “And I just want people to know that I’m going through it, too.”

According to the Mayo Clinic, 10-20 percent of known pregnancies end in miscarriage, a risk that increases in women age 35 or older. National Infertility Awareness Week continues through April 27.

“This is our world. And just like some people might say, ‘well, Jenna just announced she’s pregnant today,’ and it’s like, great. I’m so happy for her!” said Dreyer, who worked for Channel 7 in Boston before heading to New York in 2012. “That’s her world. This is my world. My sadness doesn’t take away from anyone else’s happiness, and my sadness isn’t minimized because someone else has a sadder situation.”

The couple, who got pregnant with Calvin after “trying maybe one or two months,” says they are considering IVF.

“We’re in good hands now, and we’ll just figure out what’s going to happen,” Dreyer said.
