Man in stable condition after shooting, home invasion in Fitchburg

A man is in stable condition at a local hospital after being shot in Fitchburg late Tuesday morning, officials said.

Police visited 9 Chester St. at 11:48 a.m. to in response to reports of shots fired at that address, Fitchburg Police Chief Ernest Martineau said at a news conference Tuesday.

When officers arrived, they found an unidentified male victim who had a gunshot wound, Martineau said. The man was taken to an area hospital, where he is in stable condition, he said.

The incident is isolated to the Chester Street address and was not random, Martineau said. Officers are treating it as an armed home invasion, he said.

“Anytime this type of violence [happens], it impacts this city in its entirety,” Martineau said. “We have a lot of resources out here right now, and our primary goal right now is to make sure this area is safe and that we apprehend these suspects in this case and make sure that the victim gets the attention he needs medically.”

The investigation is “still active and very fluid,” Martineau said.

Police put out an alert for a black pickup truck, possibly a Chevrolet, with a license plate that may be from Pennsylvania, Martineau said.

Two schools were locked down as a result of the incident, Fitchburg Public Schools said.

Authorities locked down the Reingold Elementary School, a little more than half a mile from where the shooting took place, Fitchburg Public Schools said in a statement.

Fitchburg Officer Keith Bourne was standing guard at Memorial Middle School, while the school was on informal lockdown, the statement said. The middle school is located more than 1 mile from where the incident took place.

Massachusetts State Police were called in at 11:58 a.m. for K-9 assistance, but the investigation is being conducted by Fitchburg police, said David Procopio, a spokesperson for the State Police.
