Up to eight inches of snow is expected to fall in parts of Massachusetts Saturday night, which forecasters said will limit visibility and make driving conditions dangerous.

“Expect snow to stick immediately to the cold roads and travel will be difficult this evening,” NWS wrote on Twitter.

Saturday’s snowfall comes on the cusp of a very cold day across the state, as temperatures hovered in the single digits early in the morning and reached highs in the 20s in the afternoon.

The weather service predicts that the northern region of the state will receive the largest amount of snow, specifically North Adams, Greenfield and Fitchburg, with anywhere from six to eight inches. The Cape and Islands are predicted to get the least, with anywhere from one to three inches.

Boston’s forecast indicates the city will get three to four inches.

The weather service said the bulk of the snowfall will come late in the evening, before tapering off and ending as light rain near the south coast.

“Temperatures will be atypical, slowly rising overnight, especially across portions of eastern MA and RI, as southerly winds increase,” forecasters wrote. “Just about all areas remain below freezing through midnight.”

Forecasters said that very cold, albeit dry, weather will continue on Monday and will last through Wednesday, though above normal temperatures will return Thursday and Friday.
