Patriots seventh-round rookie center Dustin Woodward abruptly retired Thursday, a source confirmed to the Herald.

According to the source, Woodward did not retire because of reasons related to COVID-19. While competing to back up starting center David Andrews this season, he simply lost his desire to keep playing football. Woodard was the final pick of the team’s 2020 draft class out of Memphis.

Earlier this week, the Pats signed second-year center Tyler Gauthier to provide depth along their offensive line.

As Woodard retired, the Patriots reportedly released undrafted defensive lineman Nick Coe.

Coe was one of the first undrafted rookie free agents the Patriots signed this spring. The 6-foot-5, 291-pounder was considered one of the most talented players available after the draft, a pass rusher who could play across the defensive front. However, questions lingered about his commitment after a down 2019 campaign sunk his draft stock.

The Pats now have four open roster spots and will continue with training camp practices Thursday outside Gillette Stadium.
