Arsonists have targeted the recycling boxes of homes north of Bristol city centre.

Residents of the Montpelier area awoke this morning to find a number of the green waste boxes "burnt to a crisp".

The incidents took place on Cheltenham Road near the top of the Stokes Croft are infuriating the locals.

Christian Davies, who had one of his recycling bins demolished in the arson spree, said: "I came down this morning and found everything burnt to a crisp.

"This just completely defeats the point of recycling.

"Now we are left without the box and it probably produced a lot of harmful fumes for everyone which is gross.

"It's so dangerous and I hope whichever idiot did this gets caught."

Images of the torched bins were sent to Bristol Live and show the extent of the damage.

Mr Davies said he did not hear any suspicious noises during the night and just saw the aftermath as he was heading to work this morning.

His along with a number of others had been burnt out much to the horror of Mr Davies and his neighbours.

A spokesperson for Avon Fire and Rescue, said: “One crew from Temple fire station was called to two fires on Cheltenham Road at 2.50am. Firefighters used one high pressure hose reel to extinguish the fire. The cause is thought to be deliberate.”

A Bristol Waste spokesperson say they recommend residents who have experienced vandalism to their recycling boxes order new containers from Bristol City Council’s website.

They added: "We encourage residents to bring their bins and boxes off the pavement as soon as they can following collection to avoid vandalism or theft."
