Emergency services were called to south Bristol in the early hours of this morning (February 18) after a car drove into a lamppost.

The crash happened at 1.22am on Hartcliffe Way, close to Hartcliffe roundabout.

Firefighters were called by Avon and Somerset Constabulary and helped clear the scene.

A picture tweeted by the service shows the smashed front of the BMW, as well as the bent lamppost.

Firefighters said the "driver was fine" but the "lamppost wasn't".

A spokesperson for the fire service said: "At 1.22am, we received a call from police to assist them at Hartcliffe roundabout, clearing the scene following a car that had driven into a lamppost."

A spokesperson for Avon and Somerset Constabulary said: "We received a report of a car in collision with a lamp post near to Hartcliffe roundabout in Hengrove Way at about 1am this morning.

"The driver of the vehicle was arrested on suspicion of drink driving.

"He remains in police custody."
