Bristol Energy has been named as the city council's energy supplier almost a year after it lost out on the contract to a Big Six company.

The authority has recently undertaken a procurement process to choose a supplier for the upcoming year, with the council’s own company - Bristol Energy - securing the contract.

It means that the green energy firm now has the entire portfolio for Bristol City Council - after winning the gas supply contract back in November.

As a result, all of the authority’s offices, museums, council managed schools, libraries and care facilities will be supplied by Bristol Energy.

The company’s interim managing director, Marek Majewicz, said: “This tender win signals the start of an exciting new phase of growth for Bristol Energy.

“My message to every consumer and business owner in Bristol is this is your energy company – join us to help us reinvest back into the Bristol community.”

This win comes almost a year after the firm lost out on the contract to British Gas.

At the time, former managing director Peter Haigh said that British Gas had “marginally undercut” them on the council contract.

Bristol City Council explained that it must follow strict procurement rules and can’t give any special treatment to Bristol Energy despite the fact the authority is its owner.

Speaking about awarding the new contract, deputy mayor Craig Cheney said: “We’re delighted that Bristol Energy will be helping us achieve our goal of becoming a carbon neutral city by powering Bristol with locally sourced, green energy.

“We’ve undertaken a rigorous procurement process to ensure both value for money when spending the public purse and maximum social value.

“Bristol Energy was able to offer both of these things.”

The council’s electricity will be supplied on Bristol Energy’s standard tariff.

The firm buys renewable power direct from the city’s wind turbines and solar panels in Avonmouth which provide an additional revenue scheme for the council and more local, green power generation for Bristol.

The gas provided is an industry leading 10 per cent green, and is supplied by Bristol Energy in partnership with Geneco, a local energy innovator.

To celebrate the win, Bristol Energy is donating £2,030 to its Fuel Good Fund, set up to support Bristol’s One City Plan to ensure that no one in Bristol suffers a cold home by 2030. To date, the Fuel Good Fund has raised £25,000 which supports initiatives to reduce fuel poverty across the city.
